The annual “Race to Open” has officially begun with Loveland Ski Area turning on the snowmaking guns for the 2016-17 season around 10:00pm October 3, 2016. According to resort officials, “Loveland hopes to open sometime mid-late October. It’s snowing hard and temps are going to stay low through the week providing great conditions for our snowmakers.”
As of this morning, we have received no notice of snowmaking activity at Loveland’s Race to Open rival Arapahoe Basin, but the resort did test their snowguns last week. According to Alan Henceroth, Chief Operating Officer at A-Basin, “the forecast looks good to begin snowmaking this week.”
UPDATE: Arapahoe Basin has joined in the fun and is making snow!:
Last year both Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area opened on October 29, 2015.
